Having finished University in Tokyo, Takagi (Naoto Ogata) returns to his mountain village. When a relative sees that he is in a state of despair, she encourages him to visit the old temple. There he discovers Yoshie, an unusual but very beautiful young woman (Chiaki Kuriyama). Both are consumed by loneliness and immediately attracted to one another. But the girl has a horrifying secret that she is determined to keep concealed.

At a hospital where he is receiving treatment for alcoholism, Ujo (Tohru Kazama), a university professor, meets a very beautiful young girl named Yui (Tsugumi). Though they are more than 20 years apart, Yui takes a very strong liking to Ujo. He falls madly in love with her and finally asks her to be his wife. Before she accepts his proposal, she confesses an unusual secret: her body regenerates itself when parts are cut off or destroyed. As she shares the traumatic stories of her past that lead her to discover her condition, she begins to develop a chronic headache. It becomes clear that medical treatment will not cure her, so she convinces Ujo that the only way she will live is if he cuts off her head. Ujo trustingly obliges and sits day after day with her, waiting for it to grow back . . .
