As the fantasy xxxHolic nears its conclusion, Watanuki receives unexpected aid from Zashiki-Warashi and a young fox-spirit, both of whom he aided previously. These supernatural beings save him and Doumeki from being devoured by a horde of monsters that evokes traditional Japanese ghost stories. "Self-Mutilation," the most famous episode of xxxHolic, was turned into a work of fiction by the noted young writer Nisioisin, in collaboration with the four women who created the original manga. Watanuki escorts a young woman who's been injured in a traffic accident to the hospital, then to the shop of Dimensional Witch Yuko. Nurie, the accident victim, is unable to accept happiness; Yuko has an unexpected cure for the problem. During a seemingly light-hearted snow ball fight with living snowmen, Yuko explains to Doumeki that he has no need of her magic shop, but that Watanuki does: the time he spends there is preparing him for a special challenge. But she declines to say what that challenge may be.
