Get Shorty DVD. Get Smart DVD Review John Travolta plays Chili, a small-time mobster who goes to Hollywood to collect a few debts and winds up Going Hollywood. Chili's mark is a down-and-out producer played by Gene Hackman. Chili shakes down the producer during his first night in town -- only to end up having drinks with him and pitching him a story.
Rene Russo is the producer's companion, a B-movie actress who tunes in to Chili's wavelength and falls for him. Danny DeVito is her superstar ex-husband, a pint-sized Oscar winner whose support is essential to turning Chili's pitch into a picture deal. Delroy Lindo, Dennis Farina, and James Gandolfini play buffoonish lowlifes who envy Chili's piece of the action, not because they need money, but because they too are hopelessly besotted with movies -- or at least with what movies represent: fame, glamour, and artistic expression.
When Get Shorty stays focused on this theme, it is first-rate. Writer Scott Frank (adapting Elmore Leonard's novel) and director Barry Sonnenfeld have concocted a smirky black comedy that, like its John
Lurie score, is jazzy, dry, and light on its feet.
Artists may disdain businessmen, but they often fantasize about being criminals. Film noir owes its existence to this fact, but real gangsters are very hard to get right. Movies tend to romanticize them or turn them into malevolent clowns. Unfortunately, Travolta's is the only mobster who rings true -- the rest are caricatures.
Still, they've gotten Hollywood deadright. Restaurant manners, fashions and fads, shameless hypocrisies, fawning greed and, in a rare man like Chili, a genuine, romantic flair -- these are etched in acid with a pitiless accuracy. |
