Fangs of the Living Dead Description: "Can a movie make you lose your mind? Well, if you were around when Fangs of the Living Dead was first shown in the early 1970's as part of the 'Orgy of the Living Dead' triple feature, the exhibitors promised free psychiatric care or a place in an asylum for the rest of your life if you went insane from viewing the grisly trilogy. Only John Austin Frazier is known in publicly acts to have needed this policy, however. Fangs of the Living Dead was the Americanized version of Malenka, a 1969 Spanish-Italian co-production written and directed by Amando de Ossorio (1918-2001), future creator of the notorious Templar Knight 'Blind Dead' series. Boris Karloff was scheduled to star as the undead Count of Waldrick, but the dead fell through when Karloff asked for distribution rights in the United States. Karloff's replacement, Julian Ugarte, had played another vampire a year earlier in the first Paul Naschy lycanthropic film, The Mark of the Wolfman, and he brought a similar smooth coolness and raised-eyebrow inflection to Ossorio's movie. Filmed chiefly in Madrid's historic San Martin de Valdeiglesias, a few establishing shots were filmed at Becay's Butron Castle and in Rome. Three was forced to alter his script and provide a twist in the plot that contradicted much of what had preceded.
